Gyruff (Grand Duchy of Geoff)

Summary of the Senior Campaign
Completion of a 6 year run!

Well, the senior campaign ending went pretty well after a run of 6 years. (Started 4/13/2009, interestingly enough.) In-game time from Coldeven (March) 584 to Fireseek (January) 585 (plus assorted time travel). Most characters are in the level 22-25 range and are so powerful that demigods and lesser avatars need be wary!!

A recap:
After being selected as the Lady of Pain’s champions, the party attached parts of Vecna’s body to get past the swirling Spheres of Annihilation. Death (aka Marshall), attempted a shadow stride and was nearly slain by a summoned sphere (technically Sphere of Ultimate Destruction spell). Inside, some supplicants were being indoctrinated. (Technically, there was a lot to explore and do inside the commandeered Armory, but that would have taken at least one or two additional sessions.)

The big surprise was when the sweet little (necromancer) grandma Maga Elspet turned out to be not only a member of the Triumvirate (known as Traya), but somehow trained/mentored both Sion and Nilhus. (I’m a little fuzzy on how a human could have trained the millennia-old Sion and Nilhus, but I’m sure there was some time travel involved.) <backstage: /> When “Maga Elspet” came face to face with her former conspirators, she purposefully shattered her staff in a retributive strike (400 hp of damage to those within 10’, DC17 Reflex for half). After the explosion, only the battered form of Nilhus (the Dread Wraith) remained. The weakened Nilhus was little match for the party.

Vecna was occupied by his attempt to restructure the multiverse and unable to focus on you until he finally realized that you were a threat. By the time he admitted you were dangerous, it was too late and you slew his avatar, ejecting his presence from Sigil, restoring Iuz and saving the multiverse. (It looks like you didn’t need the extra NPCs or the offer to resurrect anyone who fell. I also accidentally did the math wrong on his AC, which should have been 46 instead of 36, but that only would have prolonged the inevitable conclusion where our heroes were triumphant.)

There is a week-long celebration in Sigil, where you are provided permanent accommodations, should you wish to use them. You’ve achieved epic levels and done miraculous things. You feel like you should be celebrating more, but even those who remove his relics still feel the taint of the dark lord on their souls. Despite most of your young ages, you feel somehow very old and the appeal of adventuring has been lost. You feel more sympathy for Llwyres Sierra Blackblade and the loss/suffering that cannot be put into words. Some of you have Fey Lord duties to uphold, others have political offices to hold, but the rest need to decide what to do next…

(OOC: Senior characters and the 3.5 rules are being retired and will become NPCs in the campaign setting. Please let me know your retirement preferences.) What then, of the noble heroes/heroines?

The Unseelie Fey Lords of Time (Vilquar Arja’rok), Destruction (Ariel), Wrath (Trogdor) and Death (Marshall) find themselves constantly called to manage their portfolios. While there is time for an occasional foray (i.e. retaking Deepholm), Trogdor will have to resign as Arglwyth of Melgorn.

Magnus Aedan, still in shock over his wife, Maga Elspet, is undertaking a private quest to find her (alive or remains and soul), so he retires as High Evoker.

Radiant Servant of Pelor Alena…

Dopa Nu’Larseen (human Clr of Iuz) continues to pine for Alena. Even as she rejects and rebuffs him, he continues to pledge himself to her and manages to follow her wherever she does. (Stalker)

Harrison Mojo…

Fensgeneral …

A related tribe of lizardfolk in the Rushmoors offers Karackus the Wonder Lizard a chance to become their chieftain. A few other tribes in the Rushmoors have even offered to band together to make Karackus a Lizardman King.

Thorazor has been offered a place among the Stonereaver clan.

At first, the mighty Grukka Duka seems normal, but undertakes a quest with Ivar the Ghost and Lily Gellsblood to seek out and destroy Vecna’s cults everywhere. He is haunted by The Hand of Vecna and the Sword of Kas. The two relics play tug-of-war with Gruka’s body and soul, but the Sword is ultimately more powerful. Gruka will not willingly part with the weapon as his alignment shifts to Chaotic Evil.

Rhys ap Colwyn, Brenin of the Gyri people, has to return to run the country. When he returns, Llwyres Sierra Blackblade has a long list of items to address:
• Appointing the Brenin’s court of ministers and advisors. (And deciding if any need replacing.)

  • High Seneschal Cuthalion Cuern (Clr18 half-elf priest of Ehlonna) is still absentia in the Dreadwood.
  • High Mage Magnus Abinar (AcM18 human Enchanter) wants to refound the Magic Council at the Keep of Storm Mountain. With Elspet and Aedan gone, he only has Magnus Burkan ap Carteria (Diviner) and Magnus Waylan Crabtree (Trasmutor) left. He’ll be looking for an Illusionist, Evoker, Abjurator, Conjurer and Necromancer to fill out the schools of magic. Perhaps they could even found a wizardry school to provide more magically talented recruits for future wars.
  • High Priest Rhodri Morningmist (Clr-15 of Pelor) is an old and frail man, but still holds the position of Religious Advisor.
  • Druisinia the Crocusblossum (Drd-13 of Ehlonna) is the Old Faith Advisor to Rhys, and was appointed by the druids.
  • Gwydion of the Twained Elm (Brd/Drd) is the Old Lore Advisor and Ambassador to Keoland
  • Sericine (gray elf) is Ambassador-At-Large for Gyruff
  • Arglwyth Eridan Shadowblade (Spymaster)
  • (vacant) Minister of Public Works
  • (vacant) Minister of Agriculture
  • (vacant) Minister of Health
  • (vacant) Minister of Weights and Measures
  • (vacant) Minister of Coin

• Naming nobles (though high nobles need to be confirmed by the druids). [A list of Peers of the Realm is available, should you wish to pick from NPCs.]
o Brenin and Llwyr of Erymyth: Rhys ap Colwyn
o Llwyres of Cymeravon: Sierra Blackblade
o Llwyr of Araul Anterth: (vacant) – previously held by Melwyn Greatarm (the were-boar)
o Arglwyth of Dwyr: Braichdyn Eridan Shadowblade
o Arglwyth of Ffrwythlon Dol: (vacant) – previously held by Darlon Lea, but his lands and title are forfeit
o Arglwyth of Gwyrth Bryn: Ilan ap Dyved (Drd/Ftr) – forming a religious cantrev
o Arglwyth of Melgorn: (vacant) – previously held by Trogdor Hammerfall (Wrath)
o Arglwythes of Rhnwg yr Coed: Briallen merch Luther
o Llwyres of Rhychdir Rhos: Rhian “the Spearbreaker” merch Neirin
• Ambassadors are needed to the various lands: Oytwood Elves (she has an interim ambassador on a mission now), Dim Forest Elves, Dwarves and Gran March among others (Keoland already has an ambassador.)
• Acquiring and allocation of resources and coin for retaking and rebuilding (magic items, supplies for troops, food for refugees, tools, seeds and young stock for resettling, etc.)
• Recruiting for military and settlers in Gyruff.
• Elimination of the Fire Giant Command Structure, retaking the 3+ Fire Giant Castles, retaking Gorna, taking out the Sakhut (Cloud Giants), and eliminating the Jotenreich (Eldritch Giants)… among other missions.

Hearing the petitions and grievances of the Gyri people:

  • There is a war on the Plane of Shadow, and the people of the Light (mostly a secret cult of good) request aid
  • There are allegations of corruption upon the Baronet/Brehyr Volkmar Botkin in Aberglain. They have not been substantiated with evidence, so Sierra has been loathe to act until proof is found. Meanwhile, a counter-claim against another Lord Janos and the Flying Griffons Ban Cant has been field by Brehyr Volkmar Botkin, alleging that they broke into his house and stole his inheritance.
  • Several petitioners demand compensation for their lands being annexed by Gran March forces and various forms of subjugation under Gran March while living in Arweth.
  • Multiple requests for aid from the impoverished refugees, although there have been many discovered frauds, too. Apparently, unscrupulous foreigners have been posing as Gyri refugees to get handouts and selling them on the black market.
  • Multiple petitioners who (or their family) have been victims of various crimes (theft, banditry, murder, etc.) by bandits, thieves, brigands, marauders and worse.

• Settling in with Princess Kialla and their young child.

Valanthe Liadon became Druid of the Fruitwood Grove in the Oytwood.

Strongarm Wheatbinder went on to join a Ranger wolfpack and fought hard in the Dim Forest.

Nicole Fairweather (Rhys’ love interest) and Mordelin married and continue the fight in Gyruff. Mordelin is still wanted for murder (Nicole as an accessory) in Keoland and Gran March.

Briallen the Heatherdown retired on the Isle of Rhun.

In later years, the bodies of the Clayborns and a mule were discovered just south of Grolleck’s Grove. (Karackus’ crew)

There are too many of the fallen to list, but here’s a shot:

Wolfpack 31 is Formed

Growfest 1, 584 CY

Without enough troops to field full units, Arglwyth Darlon Lea and the Olwythi gan Gyruff (Rangers of Gyruff) organize “Wolfpacks” of talented individuals to go on specific strike missions against the enemy. Our heroes form the 31st such team, Wolfpack 31:

  • Marshall Hillock, the male Halfling Rogue
  • Gruka Duk, the male Half-Orc Barbarian
  • Olegg Araul, the male Flan (Human) Cleric of Pelor
  • Valanthe Liadon, the female High Elven Druid
  • Trogdor Hammerfall, the male Mountain Dwarf Wizard and apprentice of Magnus Aedan
  • Karackus Sarkas, the male Lizardfolk Ranger mercenary and sole survivor from a tribe in the Rushmoors
  • Eridan Shadowblade, the male High Elf Fighter/Bard with greyish skin from the Dim Forest

Defeat of the Naga

Richfest 1, 584 CY

The naga has been defeated and her lair is looted and collapsing. Those under her spell are returning to their senses, including Bishop Garath Primo. An attack by lizardmen outside of Orlane was easily repelled with only a handful of survivors who scattered before the might of Wolfpack 31.

As Wolfpack 31 passes through Orlane, members of town begin filing out of their homes and shops to watch the group pass by. You recognize a couple of those you set free, cheering with the rest of the town. You feel like real heroes as you pass through town, but at least one of the group notices a wanted poster offering 200 GP for tiger hides. Fortunately, it is still more than a week away until the full moon.

When you reach the walls of the camp, you notice a large tiger head mounted on a spike above the main gate. You are hailed by Lilly, the half-orc Captain of the Rangers. Her gruff demeanor quickly fades away as she realizes that you’ve brought back Maga Elspet and Bishop Garath. Trogdor, Maga Elspet and Bishop Garath are immediately brought before Baron Lea to report. Lilly takes Gruka aside to talk.

Marshall Hillock, second in command of Wolfpack 31 has these instructions:
1. Report to our leader(s). Include my destruction of the wine both in camp and outside of camp (intercepted the person who went to get the wine). Explain that the change of my appearance occurred during the fight with the Naga and that it has improve my stealth and hence scouting abilities. Report that we were aided by a were-tiger in the nagas lair as well as help from the npc’s (the mage, rogue and even the cleric once the hold on him by the naga was freed.
2. Obtain a disguise kit. The main purpose being to be able to return some of my original semblance to my appearance. But I would also use for other more spy like reasons.
3. Go to the inns/tavern in town (the one I stayed in and the one that drugged us find a quiet corner. Do spying similar to what I had done when I had originally looked to learn what is going on. Particularly interested in finding anyone that might have been voluntarily working for Naga or spies for others. Look for further signs of the “snake god”. Look for anyone who has valuables that are weighing them down. Particularly if they are shady characters working against the army. But also if they are not residents of the town and will be leaving town shortly. I need to obtain some funds for my magic item.
4. As discussed get a cloak of deeper darkness. If it makes it less expensive or not more expensive it would be useful to have it only in my 5 foot area instead of a larger area effect that the spell is listed at.

Gruka’s Experience:

When you get back to the camp, Lilly greets the party and seems almost pleased that you’ve returned. She is very pleased when she discovers that Maga Elspet has been rescued!

Since you’ll be staying in camp for a week to rest and recuperate, she invites you to be her sparring partner. You can use any weapons and armor that you have, but all blows must be non-lethal. First one to pummel the opponent unconscious wins. Loser buys the winner dinner. If you’re enough of a challenge, she might even sweeten the prize…

The Feast

Richfest 2, 584 CY
The Feast

In celebration of the naga’s defeat, the camp at Orlane holds another feast. Present at the head table are Arglwyth (Baron) Darlon Lea, Maga Elspet, Cuthalion Strongbow (Chief Scout of the Rangers), Bishop Garath Primo (recently liberated from the naga), Lilly Gellsblood (half-orc who administers the camp), Thayer Sloan (captain of the archers) and Gibuin Gahulatine (captain of the light foot soldiers).

At the feast it is announced (to great applause) that Wolfpack 31 was responsible for destroying the naga and her deathly charms upon the army and the surrounding people. In recognition for this, they will receive a unit citation and will be reorganized as Ban Cant 31 (Company 31) with 4 Dwrths (squads) plus support staff. (Vacancies will be filled by new recruits, including some of the elven survivors of Durlas.)

  • Trogdor is hereby promoted to Ban Cantdyn (lieutenant) and will receive a command staff.
  • Valanthe is promoted to Athrodwrthdyn (Master Sergeant) in command of the Diwinyth (Healer Corps).
  • Marshall Hillock, from my own cantrev, will be the Athrodwrthdyn (Master Sergeant), will command the 1st Dwrth (Squad) and assist in running the Ban Cant.
  • Gruka Duk will be Dwrthdyn (sergeant) of the 2nd Dwrth.
  • Eridan Shadowblade will be Dwrthdyn of the 3rd Dwrth.
  • Karackius Sarkas will be Dwrthdyn of the 4th Dwrth.
  • Olegg Araul will be promoted to Corfforol (Corporal) in the Diwinyth (Healer Corps).

Arglwyth Darlon Lea concludes with “Trogdor, you and your unit have well earned a week’s leave. Enjoy the feast and your leave with our blessings. Report to Lilly for your orders at the end of the week.”

The Rest of the Week
Trogdor spends much of the week working in the forge on a spear or polearm of some sort.
Both Gruka and Lilly Gellsblood begin having more and more bruises as the week goes on, but Gruka seems very pleased.

Marshall tends to hang out in taverns during the week, particularly the Foaming Mug.

A New Mission
  • Richfest 3, 584 CY*

The fort at Pelyth’s Cove fell suddenly and without warning. It’s loss was discovered when reinforcements approached the gate and were fired upon by orcs and half-orcs on the walls. With the loss of the fort, the enemy can approach through the Rushmoors unimpeded, flanking the Army of Liberation. If the rest of the Dim Forest were to fall, the Army would be completely cut off, so this is the next major action for the Army of Liberation.

Wolfpack 31 has a new mission:
• Accompany newfound total pacifist Bishop Garath Primo on his quest to be atoned. – Requires going to Beory’s teeth (a druidic stone circle just outside of Hochoch), behind enemy lines, to contact the druid there. The druid will assign an appropriate atonement quest.
• Since you’re going behind enemy lines, scout out some of the villages around Hochoch, including one supposedly suffering from a curse
• “Elimination” of the WereTiger threat (command does not officially know your group has a weretiger)
• Recovery of the heir to the March of Mandismoor (command doesn’t know that he is now a weretiger) = boost in troops joining the fight
• Retake the fort at Pelyth’s Cove (Mass Combat with some commando missions)

Most of the party has been promoted to sergeant and has been put in charge of a small squad of soldiers. Your company’s orders are to accompany Bishop Garath Primo on his quest for atonement, into enemy territory.

Introducing Rhys ap Colwyn

Rhys ap Colwyn is the son of Colwyn ap Ffagan who is the son of Arglwyth Ffagan Farshot of the cantrev of Ystrad Cloer. Ystrad Cloer is closest to the dwarven Clan Deepholm, home to Three-Hold Thane that rules over all dwarves (in the area). Deepholm is known for its ale and military might. It is likely that dwarves traded with those in Ystrad Cloer before the war. In fact, your signet ring of protection was forged by the dwarves of Deepholm.

Colwyn never fit into Gyri society, so he was sent to foster with relatives in Keoland. Colwyn married Calisse Skotti, daughter of Shaun Skotti and distant “cousin” to the King of Keoland. There, Colwyn’s tendancy to be a weak-willed fop worked to his advantage in the Keoish court.

Raised in Niole Dra, the largest metropolis in the Sheldomar Valley and capital of Keoland, Rhys was exposed to a variety of cultures and styles. Picking an exotic spiked chain as his weapon of choice, he became a swashbuckler under the tutelage of Zoltar Redcloak, a Sueloise foreigner from the far east.

Just as Colwyn was completely unlike his father, Rhys is completely unlike Colwyn. He romanticized the old Gyri ways of a warrior culture. When the giants invaded, Rhys kept chaffing against his father to let him join up with the volunteer Gyri army forming out of refugees, mercenaries and volunteers seeking adventure. Eventually, Rhys wore down his father enough to join and was immediately assigned the rank of Dwrthdyn over a squad of his childhood friends:
*Coroffol Grandis Za’Buume, Gnome Sorcerer
*Hugo ap Bran, Son of Bran ap Aeron, advisor to your Colwyn ap Ffagan. Hugo is brash and adventuresome where his father has the patience of age and experience. While you aren’t sure about the motivations of Bran, Hugo is a stalwart ally and good friend. Bran approved of Hugo going with you, “so someone could look after you”.
*Edmund Uradawc. Son of Caswir Uradawc, a merchant associate of Colwyn. Where Caswir is cold and calculating with a biting wit, Edmund is eager, impulsive and idealistic. You are fairly sure that Edmund has come along without his father’s blessing, but you’ve been happy with his company.

  • Lloyd Rheyd. Lloyd is a nephew or some shirt-tailed relative of the Countess Lissen Rheyd (County of Nimlee). The countess is supportive of the war in Gyruff and advocates sending troops. Her nephew seemed to like the romantic ideas of adventure and glory at arms. Zoltar recommended him highly to you. While Lloyd’s martial skills are as good as your other men, they aren’t as good as Lloyd thinks he is.

Trogdor gets hung up

It is time to ship out, but Ban Cantdyn Trogdor Hammerfall hasn’t finished crafting his staff. He orders his Athrodwyrthdyn to take Ban Cant 31 on mission and Trogdor will catch up.

A “dandy” noble, Rhys ap Colwyn, has been assigned to your unit. He is a trained Aristocrat, but has no (real) combat experience. Although he is a native of Gyruff, he was “safely” raised in the urban centers of the neighboring Kingdom of Keoland. Many of the more “nature attuned” Gyri troops joke that “Lord Rhys” may know that nature involves dirt, grass and trees, but that’s only because he read about it… The Army has seen fit to grant him the rank of Dwrth and outfit him with a squad of similar individuals raised in Keoland.

A bunch of refugees have arrived in Orlane from the town of Grollek’s Grove, just south of Hochoch in giant-conquered lands. Apparently, one of the nobles (Lord Eldoran) put a curse on a rival noble’s mansion (Lord Morrick) during a wedding between Lord Morrick’s daughter to Lord Beval’s son (from Hochoch). The curse caused insanity and horrible deformations. Lord Beval’s son died and Lord Beval barely escaped. Lord Beval has since retreated to the court-in-exile of the Grand Duke. Marshall was able to obtain documentation (in Abyssal) that indicates that Lord Eldoran entered into a contract of sorts with a demon to produce the curse with a pebble as the focus. (I’m not sure if Marshall informed the group as to how he obtained the documents, but he also has several of Lord Eldoran’s heir’s (a niece) spellbooks.)

Val’s plan was to go through the Fort at Eddleberg’s Inn, up to Fort Hope, cross the river and approach the stones (just north of Hochoch) from the north.

Grolleck's Grove

Ban Cantdyn (Lt.) Trogdor had other business to attend to, so Athrodwrthdyn (Mstr Sgt) Valanthe, the elven druid, was put in charge. Dwrthdyn (Sgt) Rhys ap Colwyn was added to the Ban Cant (Platoon) just before you left. Recent refugees arrived in Orlane from the Village of Grolleck’s Grove who spoke of a curse on the nearby lord’s estate (Morrick’s Mansion). The group had decided to check it out, since it was on the way.

Your mission: Assist/Protect Bishop Garath Primo on his quest for atonement and return him to Camp in Orlane (alive) His quest: Find the missing Torc of the Fruitwood Grove, located somewhere near Preston in the Oytwood and return it to Lowen Oakroot (the druid at Beory’s Teeth). Lowen mentionned that you will need the help of Bridgit the Nymph to find the Fruitwood Grove. Somehow, the giant’s forces were unable to see the party at the druidic circle (Beory’s Teeth) just outside of Hochoch.

Mordelin (illegitimate son of Cardor) and your own party cleric were cured of their lycanthropy. Mordelin is accused of killing his uncle, so Rhys has kept him tied up. A dire tiger (or were-tiger) was seen at night, but got away to ambush (with another Dire Tiger) a party of orcs near Grolleck’s Grove.

Marshall, the halfling, was sent ahead to scout out the village and he made contact with the local druid, Leah Redoak, living in a huge tree at the edge of town. The druid there had a Dire Tiger as a companion, which made some of the party suspicious, but she said she would send the tiger to try to find the other were-tiger(s): Cardor (wizard heir to the March of Mandismoor) and Cardor’s apprentice (Nicole), but you’ll need to find them before dawn if you are to cure them before the next full moon.

Plans for Grollek's Grove

I am forming a battle plan for our assault on Grolleks Grove (if we decide to proceed that way) so I have a couple questions for Todd:

1. The Temple to Heronious (now Grumsh); is it a stone building or wood or a combination?

2. What type of entrance (door) and windows (arrow slits?) do the watch towers have?

3. Are any of the other buildings or houses made of stone?

4. Do we see or have we seen, or does the druid know of any warning devices, particularly in the towers, such as horns, gongs, or such?

And no, I don’t think a frontal assault is the way to go…but perhaps if we had a wheelbarrow, an inferno cloak, and Andre the Giant… ;)

> 1. Stone, although it has wooden rafters that support a metal
> “shield-shaped” curved roof.
>
> 2. Watchtowers are typical stone construction with a heavy stone door
